The European Judicial Training Network recognises the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights as a central pillar of judicial training in the European Union. A key legal instrument safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms across the European Union, the Charter forms part of EU primary law and applies whenever EU Member States implement EU law.
Within EJTN, the Charter forms a cornerstone of the Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (HFR) training portfolio. EJTN’s training activities on this topic aim not only to deepen participants’ understanding of the Charter’s content but also to strengthen their ability to apply it in concrete judicial contexts.
Each year, EJTN organises dedicated training activities on the Charter, combining theoretical insights with practical skills development. The training is structured in two complementary phases: a preparatory webinar that provides an introduction to the Charter and its legal framework, and an advanced seminar focused on its practical application.
On 23–24 April, a two-day seminar, held at the premises of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) in Vienna, brought together 30 justice practitioners from 16 EU Member States. Through expert-led presentations and interactive workshops, participants explored the Charter’s relevance in specific areas of law, including equality and labour law, as well as its growing importance in the digital environment.
Looking ahead, EJTN will continue to place strong emphasis on the Charter while addressing emerging challenges to the Rule of Law, such as misinformation, disinformation and the implications of big data. In this evolving context, the Sub-Working Group on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms reaffirms the Charter’s role as a primary legal source for the protection of fundamental rights in the EU.
EJTN warmly thanks the FRA for its longstanding partnership and looks forward to further strengthening this cooperation in support of fundamental rights and the Rule of Law across the European Union.
