EJTN’s first seminar of 2023 took place in Riga on 21 and 22 February. It was hosted by the Latvian Judicial Training Centre (LJTC) and organised by EJTN’s Civil Law Sub-Working Group (Cl SWG). This brings together judges and prosecutors specialising in civil law from judiciary training schools across Europe.
The primary objective of the seminar was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of key aspects of the European Civil Procedure. These include the principle of international jurisdiction, the recognition and enforcement of judgements, and challenges linked to implementing rulings across borders.
Attendees also exchanged views on the Brussels I bis Regulation, the European enforcement order for uncontested claims, the European order for payment procedure, and the European small claims procedure.
The seminar brought together 41 judges, prosecutors and court staff from 11 countries, and was coordinated and chaired by Judge Stylianos Bios from the Hellenic National School of Judiciary. EJTN was represented by Daniel Graur (Project Manager).

EJTN’s Civil Law Sub-Working Group (CI SWG) is coordinated by the Italian School for the Judiciary (Scuola Superiore della Magistratura). It develops judicial training activities in Civil Law for European judges, prosecutors and court staff from all over Europe.
CI SWG events provide opportunities for participants to discuss the European Civil Procedure and the most crucial and recent developments in civil law at national and European levels. Participants gain valuable insights from leading academics, practitioners and policymakers, along with the opportunity to network with their European counterparts.
The CI SWG develops joint seminars and training in cooperation with EJTN’s external partners. These include the European Judicial Network in civil and commercial matters (EJN Civil), the European Association of Judges for Mediation (GEMME), the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (MPI).
In 2022, the CI SWG organised ten face-to-face training sessions and seven webinars for 558 participants from 27 countries across the EU.
