As part of its commitment to delivering timely and practical judicial trainings, EJTN is launching the Legal Updates Series, a new training format designed to help justice practitioners quickly understand and apply new EU legislative instruments as they enter into force. Through this new series, EJTN is expanding its training offer with webinars delivered in national languages and tailored to national procedural contexts.  

Running from November to December 2026, the first edition of the series will include more than 30 webinars across the EU Member States, with additional editions planned for launch in 2027. Open to judges, prosecutors, and court staff, as well as other relevant professionals where appropriate, the webinars focus on two key areas: the service of documents and taking of evidence in civil matters, and the EU e-Evidence package in criminal proceedings. 

Criminal justice: The EU e-Evidence package 

Each webinar in the series delivered under the Criminal Justice Portfolio explores the EU e-Evidence package, comprising Regulation (EU) 2023/1543, directly applicable since 18 August 2026, and Directive (EU) 2023/1544, which EU Member States were required to transpose into national law by 18 February 2026. The package introduces the European Production Order (EPOC) and the European Preservation Order (EPOC-PR), which allows judicial authorities to request or preserve electronic evidence directly from service providers established anywhere in the EU. 

Participants will learn how the new framework facilitates access to electronic evidence across borders, while gaining practical guidance on the relevant procedures, deadlines, and safeguards. The webinars will also cover the roles of competent national authorities, the JUDEX system, and key support actors, including Eurojust, the SIRIUS project, the EJN and the EJCN.  

Civil law: Service of documents and taking of evidence 

Each webinar in the series delivered under the Civil Law portfolio will focus on Regulation (EU) 2020/1784 (recast) on the service of documents and the new mandatory e-CODEX-based decentralised IT system established by Regulation (EU) 2023/2844. As cross-border service of documents continues to present practical challenges for civil courts, the recast Regulation and the transition to a fully digital, EU-wide exchange system introduce significant changes to the way judges, prosecutors, and court staff handle cross-border procedures. 

Participants will gain a practical insights into the new framework, including the key changes introduced by the recast Regulation, the operation of the e-CODEX system, the competent national authorities and e-service arrangements, as well as common challenges such as unknown addresses, language-based refusals, fictitious service and default judgments. 

*Two webinars will be held for Belgium, one in Dutch and one in French. The exact date for the webinar in French is still to be confirmed. 

Delivered online via Zoom in the national language, each webinar brings together an EU-level expert presenting the new instrument and its EU framework, and a national expert providing practical insights into its national implementation, concluding with a Q&A session. Lasting between 1.5 and 2 hours, all webinars are recorded and made available on the EJTN Moodle platform, together with the training materials, a practical FAQ, and a self-assessment quiz. 

How to register? 

Registration is open through EJTN’s Online Seminar Platform (OSP) and does not require prior nomination by the EJTN National Contact Points (NCPs). Participants are required to register using a professional e-mail address. Registrations submitted using a personal e-mail address will be cancelled.

Registration closes one week before each session. As webinars may be scheduled in either a morning or an afternoon slot, participants are encouraged to consult the specific webpage of each webinar to confirm the exact time.

Justice practitioners interesting in deepening their knowledge of e-Evidence are also encouraged to complete the online training “The e-Evidence Legislative Package – Introductory” (Activity reference: CR/2026/05)”, an EU-level webinar in English covering both the e-Evidence legislative framework and the perspective of service providers. Participation in this online training requires prior nomination by the NCPs. Interested participants should therefore contact their judicial school. The application deadline is 26 October.
