Administrative Law: Data Protection and Privacy Rights in the age of digital transformation

This training activity brings together judges and court staff from across the EU to explore the evolving landscape of the Union’s data protection framework. It focuses on recent legal and jurisprudential developments in data protection and privacy rights, with a practical look at how these changes affect judicial work.

Participants will review key case law from the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union, and receive guidance on the EU’s data protection reform package, including its new regulations and directives. Topics will also include algorithmic decision-making within the GDPR framework.

Designed as a forum for cross-border dialogue, the training promotes the exchange of best practices and the creation of lasting professional networks in this rapidly developing field of EU law.

Civil Law: Digital transformation in cross-border legal procedures: the service of documents and taking of evidence

This training activity offers participants a comprehensive overview of EU Regulations on the Service of Documents and on the Taking of Evidence Abroad, exploring their objectives, scope and practical application.

The seminar will also introduce the digital tools available for facilitating these processes across EU borders, including e-CODEX. Participants will examine how digitalisation affects the efficiency, speed and security of cross-border legal procedures, as well as its implications for the rights and obligations of the parties involved. Through practical exercises, participants will develop skills to apply digital solutions in serving documents and taking evidence abroad, ensuring compliance with EU regulations and reducing procedural delays.

Criminal Justice: EJTN-CEPOL – Joint Investigation Teams – Leadership

Organised in cooperation with CEPOL, this training activity is designed to strengthen the use and effectiveness of Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) by enhancing participants’ understanding of their set-up, functioning, management, funding and evaluation. Open to judges and prosecutors from all EU Member States – preferably with experience in EU criminal law and judicial cooperation – the seminar focuses on building leadership skills in the context of cross-border criminal investigations.

Through case-based discussions, practical exercises and peer exchange, participants will explore leadership principles, management challenges and the specific responsibilities of JIT leaders. They will examine the legal, procedural, and operational aspects of JITs, compare them with other forms of criminal investigations and gain hands-on experience in drafting agreements, securing funding and evaluating team performance. The activity also covers the range of services offered by the European Union to support JITs and clarifies the distinct roles of the actors involved.

Participants in this activity will have the opportunity to explore the digitalisation of justice systems and its impact on human rights, with a special focus on access to justice online. The seminar features workshops, presentations and the opportunity to attend a hearing at the European Court of Human Rights.
