UNESCO hosts a key webinar on AI in the Courts in partnership with EJTN

Meeting

On 21 November, the European Judicial Training Network contributed to a webinar – organised by UNESCO and other esteemed organisations – titled “AI in the Courts: Exploring Practical Applications and Transformative Use Cases in the Judicial System.” The event brought together over 1,200 participants from around the world, including legal professionals, academics and policy-makers to explore how Artificial Intelligence can revolutionise judicial processes by enhancing efficiency and accessibility in the legal system.

EJTN was a proud partner in this initiative, contributing its expertise in judicial training and digital transformation of the justice sector. Representing EJTN at the event, Haffide Boulakras, Deputy Director of the École Nationale de la Magistrature (ENM) and convener of EJTN’s Working Group on Digitalisation, highlighted the network’s commitment to equipping judges, prosecutors, and court staff across Europe with the tools to responsibly harness AI technologies. Mr Boulakras emphasised EJTN’s collaborative efforts with UNESCO, particularly in sharing the Global Toolkit on AI and the Rule of Law with its members.

This important webinar also featured a presentation by Stanislas Adam, a Référendaire in the Cabinet of the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and professor of European Union law at Ghent University. Mr Adam, an esteemed expert on the Rule of Law, provided an in-depth exploration of the practical and ethical implications of using AI in judicial decision-making. Drawing on his co-edited publication with EJTN The Rule of Law and the Good Administration of Justice in the Digital EraMr Adam discussed how AI applications can enhance judicial efficiency while maintaining transparency and fairness. He stressed the importance of robust safeguards to protect fundamental rights and the Rule of Law in the face of digital transformation.

UNESCO and EJTN also recently collaborated on a panel discussion that took place in connection with the 11th International Conference on Training of the Judiciary in Seoul, South Korea. The EJTN Secretary General Judge Ingrid Derveaux spoke at the panel discussion, highlighting the importance of collaboration. “EJTN values the fruitful cooperation with UNESCO. Joining our efforts to share expertise and experience is key to upholding the Rule of Law and protecting human rights in an increasingly digitalised era,” she noted.
