First study visits successfully implemented at European Courts
Throughout the year, 18 study visits will be implemented at various institutions.
For many years, EJTN and the European Courts[1] have cooperated on various projects and training programmes. This year, the fruitful cooperation was launched with the implementation of a series of study visits to the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union. The 2024 study visit program will also provide opportunities to attend training activities at FRA, UNODC, the Max Plank Institute for Social Anthropology, and various other EU Institutions.
In total, 80 judges, prosecutors, and court staff attended the first two study visits at either the Court of Justice of the EU or the European Court of Human Rights, which took place on 4-6th of March 2024.
These events, held on-site in Luxembourg and Strasbourg, enticed more than 480 pre-selected applications in the EU member states, making them one of the most attractive EJTN Exchange Programme activities, thus far.
As a novelty in 2024, some of the study visits to the Court of Justice in Luxembourg will be combined with additional visits to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. Participants are offered an opportunity to engage in a detailed analysis of the relevant jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of EU, and, at the same time, receive first-hand insight on the mandate and procedures of the EPPO.
In the study visit to Strasbourg, participants not only had the chance to visit the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, and the EU Ombudsman, but also to attend a Grand Chamber hearing before the European Court of Human Rights, allowing them to participate in the daily work of the key institutions dealing with the protection of human rights, democracy, and good governance across Europe.
In the second half of the year, EJTN will organize another series of study visits to the ECtHR, EPPO, CJEU, as well as FRA, UNODC, the Max Plank Institute for Social Anthropology, and the EU institutions. Each study visit is tailored to the needs of European judges, prosecutors, and court staff.
Available places are advertised twice a year on the EJTN website and social media social media. The next call will be published in April 2024 and EJTN would like to invite all interested applicants to apply.
Stay tuned with EJTN!
