On 26-27 November, European Judicial Training Network held an online training dedicated to the fundamental rights of vulnerable people, with a particular focus on individuals with disabilities and those facing barriers to societal participation. Despite established rules and norms, inclusivity continues to be an aspiration rather than a reality in many EU Member States and beyond.
Organised by the EJTN Sub-Working Group on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (HFR), the training featured a special module on the protection of persons with disabilities within the EU, alongside a broader discussion on the principle of vulnerability in international human rights law. EJTN brought together leading experts in disability law to engage with around 40 judges, prosecutors, and court staff from EU Member States and Western Balkan countries.
Moderated by Fernando Duarte, EJTN Activity Coordinator and Portuguese member of the HFR Sub-Working Group, the sessions included contributions from distinguished academics from renowned Portuguese universities. Participants examined legal boundaries and remedies available to persons with disabilities in contemporary European societies.
A first of its kind in EJTN trainings, a highlight of this activity was the session led by Professor Filipe Venade de Sousa, an authority on Disability Law at the University of Lisbon. Delivered with simultaneous interpretation in English and International Sign, this session underscored both the challenges and opportunities for ensuring meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in EJTN activities and beyond.
In line with its commitment to fundamental rights, EJTN reaffirms its dedication to promoting effective inclusivity and non-discrimination in its training programmes. Future initiatives will continue to strengthen this focus.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Fernando Duarte, as well as experts Helena Pereira de Melo and Filipe Venade de Sousa, for their invaluable contributions to this important training.
