Going beyond legal concepts in fighting human trafficking: EJTN and OSCE develop a toolkit to train judges

Meeting

On 3 March 2023, EJTN’s Secretary General Ingrid Derveaux and the OSCE’s Special Representative and Coordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, Valiant Richey, held a meeting to advance work on a toolkit to train judges about human trafficking.

The toolkit aims to address the human component of cases, going beyond the legal framework and evidence-gathering strategies. EJTN and the OSCE expect the toolkit to become a vital resource for judicial schools, enabling them to train judges about human trafficking more effectively.

In addition, European judicial training institutions will gain access to interactive methods, cases and exercises. These will address essential aspects of the problem, such as victims’ perspectives in court hearings, biases and assumptions human trafficking trials, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in conducting court cases successfully.

The toolkit is the culmination of two years of cooperation between EJTN and the OSCE and is expected to be available by early summer.

During the meeting, EJTN’s Secretary-General Ingrid Derveaux and OSCE’s Valiant Richey also had the opportunity to discuss other areas of cooperation, including the training of legal trainers and how to tackle the digitalisation of crimes.”
