General conditions

WHO CAN APPLY

Target group	Definition
Future and early career judges and prosecutors	Future judges and prosecutors are judicial or prosecution professionals undergoing compulsory official training prior to their appointment. Similarly, early-career judges and prosecutors are justice practitioners in their first years holding their positions. Both profiles can benefit from initial training activities, such as the AIAKOS Programme, THEMIS Competition and Summer Schools.
Judges and prosecutors	Serving judges and prosecutors can participate in most EJTN training activities, exchanges, and study visits. Some prerequisites, such as specific professional experience in a legal area or language level, may apply to some training activities.
Judicial leaders	Judicial leaders include Court presidents, Chief prosecutors, and Court staff managers.. Some EJTN training activities are specifically dedicated to judicial leaders.
Judicial trainers	Judicial trainers are professionals who train judges, prosecutors, court and prosecution staff and other trainers. Some EJTN training activities are specifically dedicated to judicial trainers.
Court and prosecution staff	EJTN developed a definition* of court and prosecution staff in its Strategic Plan 2021–2027: “Persons working in courts and prosecution authorities, where they form part of the corps judiciaire, who are not judges or prosecutors, and who have legal training and who either: A) Help prepare judgments or prosecutorial decisions B) Make judicial or prosecutorial decisions at least at a preliminary phase, or C) Play a significant role in cross-border judicial cooperation”. Notwithstanding this, the definition of what profiles are to be considered “Court Staff” for the purposes of EJTN training remains a prerogative of each national judicial training institution” Notwithstanding this, the definition of what profiles are to be considered “Court Staff” for the purposes of EJTN training remains a prerogative of each national judicial training institution.

* This definition can be complemented by the classification developed by the “Study on the Training Needs of Court Staff on EU Law in the EU” published by the European Commission.

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants are encouraged to ensure that their profile matches the target audience of the activity they wish to apply for by consulting the EJTN Online Training Catalogue. Please review the description of the selected activity, as application procedures and requirements may vary, including with regard to language skills. 

Please note that national judicial training institutions are responsible for launching calls and selecting participants. All selections are handled exclusively by these institutions. 

THEMIS Competition and AIAKOS Programme

Applications to THEMIS Competition and the AIAKOS Programme are collected through the judicial training institutions of the country of the applicant.

Seminars and webinars

Step	Application process
Step 1	Consult the EJTN Online Training Catalogue for a full listing of all training seminars. Some trainings may require a specialised profile or relevant prior experience. Please check the details of each individual training for more information about prerequisites.
Step 2	Watch for a call from your national judicial training institution. All applications and selections are handled exclusively by these institutions.
Step 3	You will receive a selection notice from EJTN in your inbox months before the event.
Step 4	Once selected, you will receive an invitation email with a link to complete your personal registration details. This officially registers you for the event.
Step 5	After the seminar, you will receive a post-event email with links to the evaluation form and expense claim form. Once completed, you will receive a certificate confirming your participation.

Exchanges and Study visits

Step	Application process
Step 1	Consult the EJTN Online Training Catalogue online for a full listing of all exchanges, study visits and long-term training periods opportunities.
Step 2	Watch for a call for applications on the EJTN website and through your national judicial training institution: – Exchanges (general, specialised, leaders, trainers and project-based): from September until mid-October – Long-term training periods: from September until mid-October – Study visits: from mid-November to mid-December and from mid-April to mid-May All applications are handled exclusively on the EJTN application platform: https://exp-platform.ejtn.eu/ Depending on the activity, you may be required to support your application with additional documents (e.g. language certificate, CV, authorisation from national hierarchy) EJTN-CEPOL joint exchanges are included under the specialised exchanges
Step 3	National judicial training institutions proceed with the preselection and ranking of their applicants.
Step 4	For exchanges and study visits, EJTN proceeds to the allocation of preselected applicants. For long-term training periods, the host institution proceeds with the selection of participants. If allocated, you will receive an invitation email confirming your selection and providing you with more information on the implementation of your exchange, long-term training period or study visit.
Step 5	After your exchange, long-term training period or study visit, you will receive a post-event email with links to access the reporting and reimbursement platform. Once completed, you will receive a certificate confirming your participation.

Lunchtime Webinars

Participants can join freely without formal approval from their training institution. Pre-registration to each webinar is necessary to receive access link.

Online Conversation Classes (OCCs)

Participants are selected by their home training institution.

Each new series of online conversation classes is advertised months in advance on the EJTN website and social media.

Interested participants should contact the national training institution with regards to the selection procedure.
