The webinar is aimed at to present in the context of the war in Ukraine, the needs and rights of victims of war crime in the EU ,the application of the Victims’ Rights Directive to victims of war crime
as well as to ensure that Ukrainian victims of war crimes receive in the EU the support and protection in accordance with their needs. The webinar will stresse those difficulties for victims of war crimes to receive legal advice and psychological support and how to overcome such difficulties. EU level actions on victims of war crime in the context of the EU investigations on war crimes in Ukraine will also be raised by the webinar.

Description

Effective and enhanced cooperation in criminal matters within the European Union (EU) requires a significant degree of confidence amongst the judicial authorities in the Member States. The need to be able to trust each other’s criminal justice systems to work fairly also calls for a better understanding of other European legal systems.
Based on Article 82.2(b) of the TFEU, a strong emphasis has been focused on strengthening procedural rights for suspects and accused persons in criminal proceedings by way of EU Directives establishing a body of common minimum level of procedural rights which can be enforced by EU Law.

Judges, prosecutors and court staff will be able to determine and apply the main aspects of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU when dealing with cases related to fundamental rights.

The one-and-a-half face-to-face training provides a general overview of the Charter and its importance in protecting fundamental rights in the EU. Expert speakers will synthesize aspects such as the relationship between FRA and practitioners, the effects of the Charter at national level, applicability issues and the protection of specific fundamental rights.

Practitioners will facilitate the exchange of best practices with experts by applying the Charter and the applicable case law of the Court of Justice of the EU in practical cases.
